New Nippon inspired bar Yojimbo
The newest bar to hit the scene from the massive Dining Concepts Group where the Iron Fairies, Ophelia and J. Boroski all hail from, you can expect the same creative flair in decor when you enter this Nippon inspired establishment.
Yojimbo’s concept is ‘underground, clandestine, intriguing, incredulous, mysterious’. Not quite underground as they have taken over the vacant space where Boujis used to sit which requires you to walk up a few steps on Pottinger Street, but perhaps in terms of exclusivity.
The Japanese sun mark flag is used consistently throughout this lounge with the chairs, the flooring and the DJ’s decks as the main centerpiece. Yojimbo has some casual seating at the front possibly for those who want to partake in conversation and not be so close to the spinning of the records and booming speakers inside the bar.
As you walk in, you are greeted by the bar in the center and plush, ebony seating on the side of the room which is extremely comfortable to sit on.
The cocktails are also Nippon inspired with homages to Samurai, Geishas and Ninjas. My friend and I ordered the Ninja Shadow (vodka based) and the Harajuku girl (gin based). My Harajuku girl was advertised as ‘kawaii’ and it certainly was that- a cute stained glass with a rim of rhubarb candy made it that much sweeter. I thought the balance of gin, lemon juice and the sweetness of the rhubard syrup gave it a good balance.
The Ninja Shadow came with a throwing star coaster, quite a nice touch! It tasted very much like a martini, bitter from the plum bitters, vermouth and vodka.
Verdict: Yojimbo will certainly not have the same atmosphere as Boujis did. Despite the focus on the DJ and dancefloor, Yojimbo’s vibe is that of a lounge more than a club. Also, with cocktails at 130 HKD, this seems more like a one or two drink venue before heading to a few cheaper watering holes. I wouldn’t say it is on par with its Dining Concepts counterparts but it has potential given the prime location.
