The Best Places We Ate in 2017
2017 was a big year for food in the news. The revelation that the Queen Elizabeth II has a glass of champagne a day, Donald Trump has a ‘fast food’ diet of Oreos, diet Cokes and steak, Amazon’s purchase of Whole foods, Anthony Bourdain’s documentary on the food industry’s waste and that damn coffee in an avocado skin are just some of the food headlines this year.
As we reflect on the year, Foodbabyhk would like to reminisce with some of our readers on the best place they ate at in 2017.
Fofo by el Willy
Having been to quite a few Spanish restaurants in the 852, my expectations were quite low before I paid a visit to Fofo with a friend who had visited the original restaurant in Shanghai and remarked on the quality of the food there. Armed with the Entertainer app which offered BOGOF (buy one get one free) on our brunch set, although even without this the brunch is very reasonable at 368 HKD pp we booked a brunch for the two of us. The entire brunch was the most authentic Spanish food I have had in Hong Kong, with the crispy truffle tostadas, bread smothered with tomatoes and olive oil with manchego cheese on the side, the codfish tortilla that was cooked and seasoned to perfection and lastly the crispy skin on the suckling pig. Fantastic view of the peak and chic décor to top it off, I was thoroughly impressed with this food outing!

It’s quite fitting that they say calories don’t count on your birthday, because we went to town for my birthday meal at Carbone. I tried really hard to narrow it down to just one thing. But when it comes to deciding between the fluffy warm bread basket with decadently smooth slivers of choice butter, the beef carpaccio liberally dusted with black truffle and drizzled with the fragrant oils from toasted walnuts, the lusciously creamy burrata, the perfectly executed pasta dishes that all tasted like an Italian grandma was churning them out from her little kitchen, and the perfect lemon cheesecake wedge to round the unforgettable meal up, I don’t think I can make up my mind. So I’m just going to say that the whole experience at Carbone was the most memorable culinary adventure we had in 2017!

Both the tasting menu and set lunch menu were unique and creatively presented with a story to tell. The ideal balance of Chinese and Western fusion of flavours. Their stand out dishes for me was their melt in the mouth Wagyu and of course their signature molecular xiao long bao which did not disappoint!
The Demon Chef himself was in the kitchen preparing his works of art. Always a plus to see the master at work!

Hands down the best chicken soba! Located in Happy Valley and recently their 2nd branch opened in central, this ramen shop is growing in popularity and well deserved (even though I secretly wanted to keep it to myself to avoid any queues).
Originating from Japan, the owner liked it so much during his visit that he asked for permission to open one in Hong Kong, and he did exactly that with the request that everything be kept the same. Both the tsukemen and soba are just as good! Try everything.
